Austrian Wine

Wine growing in Austria dates from the Roman times, but a subsequent prohibition on the planting of grapes lasted until almost the fourth century AD. Thereafter, wine growing spread quickly throughout eastern Austria, largely controlled by ecclesiastical institutions. This became a nation renowned for wine drinking; the capital Vienna is named for this activity. The science of vine growing proliferated in the mid-19th century and Austrians became celebrated for their knowledge of viticulture. Riesling is a relatively recent introduction, but is thriving in Austrian vineyards. Gruner Veltliner is considered the grape of the country. And the red wines should certainly not be overlooked.
