Mourvèdre is a sun-loving character, originally from Spain where it is known as either Monastrell or Mataro. It is one of the thirteen permitted grapes of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, which is its most northerly outpost, generally preferring latitudes further south. It is the grape of Bandol in Provence, where it produces wines of enormous complexity and age-worthiness. It has been welcomed in the warmer vineyards of the world and is one of the triumvirate of grapes in GSM (the others being Grenache and Syrah).
