Zinfandel is a fascinating grape. It's most long-standing synonym is Tribidrag and by some means or other Tribidrag made its way from Croatia to Puglia in southern Italy where it became known as Primitivo and thence to California where it changed its name to Zinfandel. In any event, this Croatian variety hinted at its origins with the Italian synonym (now obsolete) Zagarese i.e. native of Zagreb. Wines made from Zinfandel tend to be full-bodied, deeply-coloured red wines of rich, spiced dark fruit character that can lack something in the way of complexity. The best examples however are capable of lasting decades in bottle.
