This is among the oldest wineries in all Portugal, the original vineyards having been planted here in Evora (centre of the country in the Alentejo) in 1517. In a country dominated by small growers cultivating minuscule plots of vines, Cartuxa is a leviathan, working over a thousand hectares of vineyards, 850 of which they own outright, with the remainder being on long-term rental.

N.B. This is a blend of Aragonez (local name for Tempranillo), Trincadeira and Alicante Bouschet (this last one of the few wine grapes to have coloured juice). This is a highly scented wine, giving up its aromas of barbecued meat, dark fruit and hot sand. It goes in the mouth plush and rich and quickly picks up fresh structure. And wow, it’s a long thing, its sustained grip hedging the tongue with tacky, mineral tannins. Just a fabulous and expressive red wine, ideal for meals involving red meat, including game. Bowes Wine original note
All our wines are given a Sweetness Indicator from 1 to 5, with 1 being the driest and 5 being the sweetest.
This can be found for every wine under the Wine Details tab.
Most red wines are dry and therefore are indicated with a 1. The sweetness becomes more relevant with white wines, sparkling wines and pudding/dessert wines such as Sauternes and Tokaji.
