2016 Fleurie Clos Vernay, Lafarge Vial

2016 Fleurie Clos Vernay, Lafarge Vial

Ref: LAVI161
Red  |  Still  |  13% ABV

The wines at this great Volnay estate are now made by Frédéric Lafarge, Michel's son. The domaine works around 10 hectares of vines biodynamically and produces among the finest wines in the Côte de Beaune. The cellars here are low-ceilinged, cobwebbed and there's very little evidence of new barrels (very few are employed). Yet the wines emanating from the old wood casks are as beautiful an expression of their individual grape varieties and terroirs as one could hope to encounter.

Tasting Notes
Tasting Notes

Lots of quartz present in the soils here. 25% whole bunch fermentation. Dried flowers appear in this pretty nose. Aromas are of crisp red fruit with a hint of voilet. The palate is cool and red and with high grip. Something really aristocratic to this wine's purity. A complete and linear wine to taste; direct and very firmly mineral. It becomes very spicy later on. Wow. Extra! "The 2016 Fleurie Clos Vernay, which lies on granite and quartz soils, has more focus and fruit intensity than the Joie du Palais at the moment. This is likewise very well defined with hints of vanilla pod complementing the red cherry fruit. The palate is brimming over with fleshy red cherry and strawberry fruit. Beautifully balanced with great poise on the finish, this is one of the best Beaujolais that I have tasted from Lafarge." Neal Martin

Sweetness Explained
Sweetness Explained

Sweetness

All our wines are given a Sweetness Indicator from 1 to 5, with 1 being the driest and 5 being the sweetest.
This can be found for every wine under the Wine Details tab.

Most red wines are dry and therefore are indicated with a 1. The sweetness becomes more relevant with white wines, sparkling wines and pudding/dessert wines such as Sauternes and Tokaji.
