The Léoville estate was, along with Châteaux Margaux and La Tour de Saint-Lambert (now Latour), among the first to produce wine in the Médoc. Known then as Mont-Moytie after the then owner, the name was changed to Léoville by the descendants of the Moytie - the de Gascq family - in the mid-18th century. Iin 1840 the huge (200 hectare) estate was split between siblings. Pierre Jean de Las Cases named his Léoville estate after himself, as did the son-in-law of Las Cases's sister: Baron Jean-Marie Poyferre de Ceres. Still today the buildings are more-or-less contiguous and share parking. Today's owners, the Cuvelier family, bought the property in the 1930s, having previously purchased Le Crock in St Estèphe and the Haut-Médoc property Camensac. Subsequent to the purchase of Poyferré, they added the St Julien Moulin Riche to their portfolio. Current owner Didier Cuvelier has thoroughly modernised Léoville-Poyferré and since 1982 it has been among the finest wines of St Julien.

"Having retreated into its shell, the deep garnet colored 2009 Léoville Poyferré gives up slowly revealing notions of cigar boxes, pencil lead, charcoal, rose hip tea and fragrant earth with a core of preserved plums, crème de cassis, espresso and Indian spices. Full, rich, seductive and voluptuously fruited in the mouth, the palate features firm yet beautifully velvety tannins and seamless freshness, finishing very long and spicy. 98/100." Lisa Perrotti-Brown
All our wines are given a Sweetness Indicator from 1 to 5, with 1 being the driest and 5 being the sweetest.
This can be found for every wine under the Wine Details tab.
Most red wines are dry and therefore are indicated with a 1. The sweetness becomes more relevant with white wines, sparkling wines and pudding/dessert wines such as Sauternes and Tokaji.
