2010 Château Léoville Lascases, St Julien

Before the three parts of the vast Léoville estate were separated - even before the name Léoville had been applied to this tract of land - wine was being produced here: among the earliest of all vineyards of the Médoc. The vineyard was name Mont-Moytie after its owner, a member of parliament in Bordeaux in the mid-17th century. The next owner, Alexandre de Gascq, expended the estate to over 300 hectares. And it was he that introduced the name Léoville. After the revolution, the part that became Léoville Barton was sold off, then in 1840 the estate was split again with the eldest son of the owner, Pierre Jean de Lascases, receiving a share that would become Lascases. As the 19th century came to a close, the estate's managing director bought Lascases, subsequently bequeathing his shares to Andre Delon whose family still owns the property today. Lascases neighbours Latour at the far northern end of St Julien. The owners also have Nénin in Pomerol and the Médoc Château Potensac.

"The most powerful wine in this vertical is the 2010 Léoville Las Cases, a full-bodied, deep and multidimensional behemoth redolent of rich berries, cassis, burning embers, pencil shavings and loamy soil. Broad-shouldered, layered and muscular, with huge reserves of concentration and sweet, powdery tannin, it concludes with a broad, resonant finish. This is a prodigious, somewhat imposing Las Cases that is still an infant a decade after bottling. 98/100." William Kelley
