2009 La Tâche Grand Cru, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti

Two hectares of Vosne vineyards owned by the church were bought by the de Croonembourg family in 1631, renaming the land Romanée and adding the neighbouring La Tâche. In 1760 the holding was acquired - following a bidding war with the king of France's mistress - by the Prince de Conti. The vineyards were appropriated by the state during the revolution and, having changed hands a couple of times, ended up in the possession of Jacques-Marie Duvault-Blochet in 1869. Duvault-Blochet subsequently added parcels of Echézeaux, Grands Echézeaux and Richebourg. The five-and-a-bit hectares of Romanée-St-Vivant were leased to the domaine by the Morey-Monge family in 1966 with the sale finally agreed in 1988. Together the DRC range constitutes some of the world's most sought-after and expensive wines.

"The 2009 La Tâche Grand Cru is still a decade away from the plenitude of maturity, but it's already a head-turning wine, soaring from the glass with an extravagant bouquet of rose petal, Asian spices, grilled meats, rock salt, espresso roast, rich soil tones, plums and dark chocolate. On the palate, it's full-bodied, ample and richly structured around fine-grained chalky tannins, with a deep and multidimensional core and succulent underlying acids, concluding with a long, fragrant finish.
