This huge vineyard, sitting at the highest point of the Sauternes commune, is in a class of its own when it comes to producing top quality sweet wine. Wine has been made here since the Middle Ages, when Bordeaux was under control of the English crown (the king was also the Duke of Aquitaine). As is so often the case, it was a young widow - Françoise Joséphine de Sauvage d’Yquem - who set Yquem on the road to greatness (it was Francoise who came up with the idea of picking the fruit is several passes through the vineyard). Today, Yquem is owned by LVMH.

"Pale to medium lemon-gold color, the 2010 d'Yquem has retreated into its shell at this youthful stage, offering spritely suggestions of lemon curd, lime cordial and green mango with wafts of honeysuckle, spice cake, sea spray and beeswax plus a hint of gingerbread. The palate really comes through with super intense, tightly wound citrus, savory and mineral layers carried by a laser-precise backbone of freshness, finishing with crazy persistence that lingers a full three minutes and then some. Most red wines are dry and therefore are indicated with a 1. The sweetness becomes more relevant with white wines, sparkling wines and pudding/dessert wines such as Sauternes and Tokaji.
