Clos du Marquis was originally conceived as the second wine of Château Léoville Lascases and was among the first ever second wines of Bordeaux. In recent years, the cuvée has changed in concept. Le Petit Lion is now Lascases's second wine and Clos du Marquis is another wine from that venerable property, coming from a distinct set of vineyards.

"The 2008 Clos du Marquis has an expressive bouquet with blackberry, briary and pencil shaving aromas that gains intensity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with just a light seam of greenness, although it only adds freshness and asserts its classicism. I find this fresh and balanced, sporting just the right amount of dryness on the cassis-driven finish that balanced with the fruit, lending it a "breezy" and unassuming character that suits it down to the ground. Most red wines are dry and therefore are indicated with a 1. The sweetness becomes more relevant with white wines, sparkling wines and pudding/dessert wines such as Sauternes and Tokaji.
