Bairrada lies south of Oporto, its vineyards cooled by Atlantic airs. And its wines have been known in Britain since the early 18th century, albeit the dark and deep reds of the region.
Here champagne grapes are grown at altitude on clay-limestone soils, the wines made in the traditional (i.e. champagne) method.
This wine has been aged on its lees (yeast cells) for 48 months, which is a great deal longer than many a non-vintage champagne.

Colour is a pretty pale lemon, the nose a nicely rich thing, albeit not overtly fruity. Instead I found spice, a hint of lemon and quite a bit of delicious-smelling toastiness. Across the tongue, the very fine bead is superbly integrated. Fruit is lemon and – perhaps especially – lime, all veneered by that tasty toast. It’s a wine full of flavour, rich, long and persistent. It finishes on a pointed note of smoky spice. An light earthiness adds texture to its structure. This is really very lovely.
All our wines are given a Sweetness Indicator from 1 to 5, with 1 being the driest and 5 being the sweetest.
This can be found for every wine under the Wine Details tab.
Most red wines are dry and therefore are indicated with a 1. The sweetness becomes more relevant with white wines, sparkling wines and pudding/dessert wines such as Sauternes and Tokaji.
