This ancient estate has been owned since 1914 by the Martini di Cigala family. The estate sits at the boundary of the old kingdoms of Florence and Siena. In the 13 century there was a massive fortress on this site of which remnant walls can be seen and in the cellars of which estate wines are aged. This is the southernmost part of the Chianti Classico area. The estate comprises 160 hectares of which 31 are vineyards, 11 are olive groves, 40 are woodlands, 78 are arable land, lawn and pasture. The soils are highly variable, tuffaceous with over 70% sand, sandy-silty, clayey-sandy, alkaline, calcareous.

"The 2008 Percarlo is holding back serious power in reserve. A tightly wound core of fruit hits the palate as this energetic, vibrant wine shows off its taut personality. The 2008 needs time to resolve some of its inner tension, but it is strikingly beautiful just the same. Today it reminds me of the 1996, but with more kick and depth.
