Sassicaia (meaning stony field) was the creation of Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta who planted Cabernet Sauvignon vines in the Tuscan coastal region of Bolgheri in 1948. For twenty years the wine from this vineyard was reserved for the family to enjoy, but Mario's son Nicolò and nephew Piero Antinori convinced him to offer a commercial release of the '68 vintage. Hiring the celebrated consultant Giacomo Tachis took the wine to greater heights of quality and the wine rapidly became a global icon.
The 2022 vintage is just shy of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, the rest being Cabernet Franc. And rather than being a sort of claret simulacrum, as ever it takes the Cabernet and moulds it into something truly Italian, not to say extremely fine.

"Aromas are rich and dark with the wood that smells of chestnuts. There’s air inside the nose of dark plum and chocolate mint. This goes in the motyh rich and there’s wood here in both flavour and structure. It offers a busy, dense throughput. A really long wine with a superbly intense, busy finish. Very, very long indeed. Needs 5 or 7 years." Caspar Bowes
“Glowing crimson with a vermilion rim. Very strong balsam notes on the nose. Not for the first time, Sassicaia smells so much more Tuscan – almost Sangiovese – than Bordelais. Exciting freshness and energy with a bit more mid palate and expression than some vintages at this stage. Tannins are present but far from intrusive. Really a pretty fine wine that's the opposite of showy. In fact, you wouldn't think it came from somewhere as warm as Bolgheri. Presumably those high-elevation vineyards and the sea breeze help enormously. As usual, it's introvert at this stage. 17.5++.” Jancis Robinson
All our wines are given a Sweetness Indicator from 1 to 5, with 1 being the driest and 5 being the sweetest.
This can be found for every wine under the Wine Details tab.
Most red wines are dry and therefore are indicated with a 1. The sweetness becomes more relevant with white wines, sparkling wines and pudding/dessert wines such as Sauternes and Tokaji.
