It seems that vines have been grown on this spot (now within the suburbs of the city of Bordeaux) since Roman times but a chateau was not built on the site until the mid 16th century. The estate had been owned by the de Pontac family who acquired it as a dowry in the early 16th century. in the mid 17th century M de Pontac marketed his wine heavily in London, especially at the royal court, where Kind Charles II drank Haut-Brion on a regular basis. Pepys was drinking Haut Brion at the pub in 1663, commenting on its quality. In May 1935 the peoperty was bought by American Clarence Dillon. Domaine Clarence Dillon added La Mission Haut Brion in 1983. Haut Brion has just over 50 hectares of vines,r ed and white, planted on sand and gravel.
"The 2017 Haut Brion was picked from 31 August to 29 September, the longest harvest ever, matured in 69% new oak with 14.25% alcohol (lower than recent vintages.) It has a more generous bouquet than the La Mission Haut Brion at this point: black cherries, blueberry, a little confit fruit, hints of warm gravel and clove. It is much more restrained than the previous vintages - cooler and linear. The palate is medium bodied with firm tannin, nicely structured with more grip in the mouth than the La Mission. What it has in common with the aforementioned is a sense of symmetry. It feels very persistent with a light marine/oyster shell influence on the finish. This probably has the edge over the La Mission Haut Brion at the moment, but intra family competitiveness aside, it boils down to a great follow up to the brilliant 2015 and 2016." Neal Martin
All our wines are given a Sweetness Indicator from 1 to 5, with 1 being the driest and 5 being the sweetest.
This can be found for every wine under the Wine Details tab.
Most red wines are dry and therefore are indicated with a 1. The sweetness becomes more relevant with white wines, sparkling wines and pudding/dessert wines such as Sauternes and Tokaji.
