One of the most important producers in the commune of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Vincent Avril of Clos des Papes still resolutely makes but two wines, a red and a white (plus a little Petit Vin d'Avril, a Vin de France). It is also one of the few domaines to grow and employ all thirteen grape varieties. Very low yields are the norm here. A "gold standard estate", according to John Livingstone-Learmonth. For style, Vincent Avril looks north and his love of the wines of Burgundy.

"there’s a ruby top to its red robe; the nose lies in wait, holds potential, is hardly stirring, has a very sure depth, reveals close-knit red fruit, accentuated raspberry. This is very good, with great definition, lovely refinement, spine, quality juice and persistence. The aftertaste is peppery. This has an ace linear style, is buoyed by a real good Mourvèdre contribution, has a Hermitage Bessards-like spine. It’s a vintage that has moved around over its life, is fab. Menthol, juniper feature on the finish. It makes me feel 10 years younger! “It’s one of the best I have made; when I went off to Burgundy it was the type of wine I wanted to make when I was young – I didn’t want the excess style of Châteauneuf-du-Pape – yes, richness and power, structure, but elegance, also finesse,” Vincent Avril.
