It seems that vines have been grown on this spot (now within the suburbs of the city of Bordeaux) since Roman times but a chateau was not built on the site until the mid 16th century. The estate had been owned by the de Pontac family who acquired it as a dowry in the early 16th century. in the mid 17th century M de Pontac marketed his wine heavily in London, especially at the royal court, where Kind Charles II drank Haut-Brion on a regular basis. Pepys was drinking Haut Brion at the pub in 1663, commenting on its quality. In May 1935 the peoperty was bought by American Clarence Dillon. Domaine Clarence Dillon added La Mission Haut Brion in 1983. Haut Brion has just over 50 hectares of vines,r ed and white, planted on sand and gravel.

"The 2009 Haut-Brion is deep garnet colored and slightly closed and shy to begin, slowly unfurling to reveal sensuous notions of warm blackberries, plum preserves, mulberries and blackcurrant cordial with touches of star anise, mocha and damp soil. Full-bodied, taut and tightly wound in the mouth, the palate delivers mouth-coating black fruit and mineral layers with a very firm frame of ripe, grainy tannins, finishing long and earthy. This needs time! 100/100." Lisa Perrotti-Brown
All our wines are given a Sweetness Indicator from 1 to 5, with 1 being the driest and 5 being the sweetest.
This can be found for every wine under the Wine Details tab.
Most red wines are dry and therefore are indicated with a 1. The sweetness becomes more relevant with white wines, sparkling wines and pudding/dessert wines such as Sauternes and Tokaji.
