2004 Barolo Monprivato, Giuseppe Mascarello

Since the late 19th century the Mascarellos have been running their own wine estate. It was Giuseppe Mascarello who founded the company in Monforte d’Alba in 1881 and it was Giuseppe's son Maurizio who bought land in Monprivato in Castiglione Falletto and moved the business there. Maurizio's two sons Giuseppe and Natale fell out and the estate was split between them. Giuseppe completely renovated the winery, bringing in new Slavonian oak barrels. His son Mauro took over in 1968 and began a decade of experimentation in wine making. When Mauro's uncle died, he took the chance to rejoin the two estates, considerably extending its vineyard area.

"Mascarello’s 2004 Barolo Monprivato is an explosive wine with an almost Pinot-like expression of purity in its fruit. This round, sweet Barolo is extremely primary at this stage, with tons of dense fruit that almost cover the wine’s tannins completely. Subtle overtones of roses and tar develop in the glass, rounding out this majestic wine. Monprivato is one of the world’s very finest values in collectible, age-worthy wine, and the 2004 is another classic in the making. I was blown away by this wine’s sheer balance and harmony, both of which are remarkable considering the wine’s age." Antonio Galloni
