The firm of Warre founded as Burgoyne & Jackson at the start of the 18th century. In 1729 it became Clark, Thornton & Warre, the Warre component being an Indian born son of members of the East India Company. By the end of the 18th century Warre was responsible for 10% of all port shipments to the UK. The Symington Family is descended from Andrew James Symington and Beatrice Atkinson who were married in Oporto in 1891. Andrew James arrived as a young man from Scotland in 1882 and was admitted to partnership in the firm of Warre & Co. in 1905 and in 1908 he became the sole owner of Warre & Co.

Most red wines are dry and therefore are indicated with a 1. The sweetness becomes more relevant with white wines, sparkling wines and pudding/dessert wines such as Sauternes and Tokaji.
