First mention is made of this property in 1680 when two brothers - Dominique et Guilhem Armailhacq - are recorded as owning land in Pauillac. Vines are first mentioned in 1750 when it is noted that the Armailhacq estate was planted with vines at that time (like much of the Médoc). Spending their fortune on improving the quality of their wine, the family falls on hard times, having to sell Les Carruades du Pouyalet to Lafite to raise capital. Having been classified fifth growth in 1855, Armailhac struggles after WWI and sells some of its 70 hectares of vineyards. Baron Philippe de Rothschild becomes a minority shareholder, shortly afterwards buying the entirety of the business, whilst offering then owner Comte de Ferrand an annuity. The property is renamed Mouton Baron Philippe (later Mouton Baronne Philippe) between 1956 and 1988.

"The Château d’Armailhac 2005 has a very typical d’Armailhac nose with ebullient red and black fruit, cedar and mint coming through with a light black olive scent. The palate is medium-bodied, very well balanced, supple in the mouth and therefore, one of the more approachable Pauillac ’05s. There are hints of bay leaf and clove emerging on towards the finish that fans out with panache, a savory tincture lingering on the finish." Neal Martin
All our wines are given a Sweetness Indicator from 1 to 5, with 1 being the driest and 5 being the sweetest.
This can be found for every wine under the Wine Details tab.
Most red wines are dry and therefore are indicated with a 1. The sweetness becomes more relevant with white wines, sparkling wines and pudding/dessert wines such as Sauternes and Tokaji.
