A bishop by the name of Calon owned this property in the 12th century. Many years later its ownership was assumed by the de Ségur family, finally the Marquis de Ségur, who also owned Lafite and Latour. His comment was that although he made his wine at Lafite and Latour, his heart lay at Calon, hence the heart that appears on the label. This was a massive estate that included Phélan Ségur; Montrose was a wooded region within the estate. And, indeed, the de Ségur stable itself was massive, also latterly including Mouton. The modern era is all about the Gasqueton family who owned Calon from 1894 until 2012, when it was sold to Suravenir, as insurance company. Renovations are well underway; money is being spent. The future at Calon is bright indeed.

"Good wine, good wine Mrs. G. Very impressive definition on the austere nose laced with cigar box, damp earth, blackberry, thyme and black tea. Chewy entry on the palate, firm, bold tannins here with ripe black cherries, redcurrant and sour red cherry. Tannic, slightly muffled on the finish but it has a sense of drive and purpose, yet maintaining an admirable degree of refinement. Tasted October 2009." Neal Martin
All our wines are given a Sweetness Indicator from 1 to 5, with 1 being the driest and 5 being the sweetest.
This can be found for every wine under the Wine Details tab.
Most red wines are dry and therefore are indicated with a 1. The sweetness becomes more relevant with white wines, sparkling wines and pudding/dessert wines such as Sauternes and Tokaji.
