Angélus lies on the St Emilion limestone plateau behind Château Canon and abutting the senior vineyards of Englishman Jonathan Maltus: Le Dôme etc. In 1909 Maurice de Bouard de La Forest inherited land that an ancestor had bought in this sector, adding 3.5 hectares of a vineyard called L'Angélus. So the property was born. Maurice continued to add vineyards over the years. in 1988 Hubert de Bouard took over the estate and quality has increased in his tenure. In 2012 Château Angélus - along with Château Pavie - was upgraded to Premier Grand Cru Classe A, joining Cheval Blanc and Ausone at the top of the St Emilion hierarchy.
"The 2004 has a very fragrant, more floral bouquet than the 2003 with fine definition and clarity, notes of wild strawberry and raspberry lifting from the glass with a hint of rose petal. The oak is very well integrated. The palate is well balanced with fine tannins, just a little hardness at the moment, suggesting that this needs another one or two years to mellow. It is a little foursquare towards the graceful finish but decent length. Salty tang on the aftertaste. Very fine indeed for the vintage. Tasted October 2011." Neal Martin
All our wines are given a Sweetness Indicator from 1 to 5, with 1 being the driest and 5 being the sweetest.
This can be found for every wine under the Wine Details tab.
Most red wines are dry and therefore are indicated with a 1. The sweetness becomes more relevant with white wines, sparkling wines and pudding/dessert wines such as Sauternes and Tokaji.
