Although there are records of doings on this estate as far back as the 14th century (including the construction of a defensive tower for a purpose of defence of the estuary), it was in the early 18th century and the ownership of Nicolas-Alexandre de Ségur that Latour starts its long period of renown. Ségur also owned Mouton, Calon and Lafite. It was a new ero of European free trade and aspiring classes in England wanted the best wines. Latour quickly gained a reputaiotn - and price ticket - above most other Bordeaux wines. Descendants of the Ségur family owned the estate until 1962 when it was bought by UK investors (of which Pearson and Harveys of Bristol were the largest). In 1993 Francois Pinault became the majority shareholder and there has been an ongoing period of renovation underway since then.

"The 2005 Latour is blended of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, with the rest Merlot and Petit Verdot. It is the biggest surprise of this tasting—until now, the wine was relatively closed and broody, but today the wine is just starting to reveal its personality—and what a stunner! Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, it opens with provocative floral scents of roses and violets over a core of fresh blackcurrants, chocolate-covered cherries and black raspberries with hints of fertile loam, unsmoked cigars and black tea. Medium to full-bodied, firm, grainy and packed with muscular fruit, it has an epically long, savory finish sparked by floral notes. 12,000 cases were made." Lisa Perrotti-Brown
All our wines are given a Sweetness Indicator from 1 to 5, with 1 being the driest and 5 being the sweetest.
This can be found for every wine under the Wine Details tab.
Most red wines are dry and therefore are indicated with a 1. The sweetness becomes more relevant with white wines, sparkling wines and pudding/dessert wines such as Sauternes and Tokaji.
